4 Tips For Your Perfect Baby Photoshoot

4 Tips For Your Perfect Baby Photoshoot 600 400 Family & Newborn Photography Northampton

Your baby photoshoot will typically take between 60-90 minutes. We’ll capture a variety of individual character portraits, and a few with mum and dad too. We’re truly baby led, allowing lots of time for your little one to relax into the studio environment and settle. We’ll also take breaks as we work for nappy changes, cuddles and feeds as needed so your baby is comfortable and relaxed. Here’s a few tips we highly recommend you consider before attending your baby photo shoot…

1. Schedule outside of your baby’s nap time
If there’s a time of day that your baby’s temperament is at it’s best, then although it sounds obvious…please schedule your session then! If your baby doesn’t have a routine, please chat with us beforehand about flexibility so we can work with you for the best results. It’s also worth mentioning that babies with colds, teething pain etc often won’t feel like beaming their usual beautiful smiles, again, it’s best to consider rescheduling.

2. What to wear
With infants, everyday clothes are not always photography friendly! Collars, pinafores and dungaree straps have a tendency to ride up and cover the lower chin and mouth area. Equally, vests and bodysuits have a habit of peeking out from under top clothes making necklines look complicated. For photoshoot purposes, it’s worth doing away with the vest to achieve clean lines in your images. Your baby will probably look cute in just a vest or nappy, traditional style. As with all photoshoots, it’s wise to avoid heavy pattern which competes for attention, and detracts from the impact of the final images. We want your baby to be the star of their photos. For family shots, it’s worth considering co-ordinating your clothes. A hot pink against bright yellow can be a bit overpowering.

3. Props
Although our signature style is prop free, we use teddy bears, puppets and toys to play and engage with your baby. If they have a favourite soft toy it’s worth bringing it along for familiarity to help them relax into the session.

4. Get Involved!
We’ll use all our experience to get your little one to relax and interact with us, but sometimes only mummy or daddy will do. We’ll sit you close by if your little one seems unsure in front of the camera. Sometimes the opposite applies and its best when parents are on the side lines, so we’ll work with your baby and how they present on the day. Having said that, please try to relax! We always expect your baby’s temperament to be changeable during the session. In our own experience of parenting, our children never performed on demand so we totally ‘get’ your anxieties! When parents relax children usually take the cue to follow suit. We always get a good selection of images, and it’s often the non smiley ones which capture the true, characterful expressions.
