When you look straight into the eyes of a young baby and smile, there’s nothing quite as captivating as when they smile right back at you. 4 Month old baby Martha has learnt how to charm the socks off everyone around her with her huge blue eyes and had us clucking and cooing during her baby photoshoot. She’s learnt the art of charm through delivering massive smiles that can’t fail to hook you.
We often talk about the task of portrait photography as capturing individuality and character. Although a tiny baby, Martha has already got particular ‘looks’ that are uniquely hers and her personality shone through. As parents ourselves, we know similar expressions in our own children, and these are treasured as we all know how quickly children change and grow. Most parents wouldn’t want to forget these ‘looks’ from infancy, ever. This is the pleasure in what we do, its so rewarding when we capture much loved expressions and we know how much they mean to our clients.
Martha has beautiful expressive features, a gloriously gummy grin and eyes that light up when she smiles… which is all the time. Martha’s face really came alive and at the risk of gushing, her beautiful, pure expressions kind of made her sparkle! She was happy to interact with us as the shoot progressed, and we relived her gorgeous smiles during the tough job of editing afterwards.
The bond with both parents couldn’t be any clearer. Complete joy in the safety of being held close for cuddles with both mum and dad while still being playful with the camera.
Some of the candid individual images are also very strong, the non smiley shots are often very powerful and pack a punch. We love this one where the beautiful details of her hands and complexion clearly show how young she is.
Unusually for us, we’ve decided to show these images in a muted colour. Martha’s pale skin tones against the black backdrop really accentuates her peachy, almost porcelain, complexion and the desaturated colour adds just a touch warmth to the results. Martha was so engaging that colour just seems to work for this set of images, and for us echoes how vibrant she is. Black and white is a classic format and absolutely our preferred medium, but there are some occasions when colour really adds something to the images.
