Although all newborns are amazing, this was an extra special shoot for us. ‘Family portrait photography’ truly was the right phrase yesterday, as we had the privilege of photographing our week old Great–nephew, Elias!

Have you ever wondered what our work looks like in colour? We’ve worked hard to establish our signature black and white style but decided it was high time to introduce some subtle colour tones, aiming to achieve a softer, dreamy feel to the images.

When we use colour, we still do so with much planning so our images stay pure and simple which in this case, enhanced Elias’ peachy baby skin. He also had a lovely crop of dark hair which contrasted well with the snowy white blankets and gave real definition to our favourite ‘taco’ pose – straight on to the camera with his head supported by a hand for safety, later removed by computer magic.

Little Elias was soooo chilled out. He contently supped on milk throughout the shoot and was transfixed by the world around him, meaning we could wrap him and capture some beautiful wide eyed shots.

Once asleep, he allowed us to work quickly and his open mouthed snoozing expression was super cute.

We also grabbed the opportunity for a bit of drama to recreate the stylish ‘head in hands’ pose which is the perfect way to include parents into a shot without actually featuring. If you’re a bleary eyed new parent reading this we think you’ll completely understand why being in front of the camera might have little appeal after the birth!

Newborn shoots aren’t for the faint hearted. The studio gets hot, babies cry, feed, break wind and empty themselves repeatedly… it’s totally what we expect! But this will soon be forgotten, and replaced with beautiful newborn shots which capture the precious early days forever. We so often hear the phrase “I wish we’d had them done when my children were small” so we think it’s worth investing just 2-3 hours during the early days.

A huge thanks to two amazing new parents who were so generous with their time. And to Elias, especially for the action poo shot right into my hand, which I don’t think I’ll ever forget, my therapy bill is in the post! Debbie ;-}
