From Brand New to First Birthday… Which Baby Stage is Right for You?
As a studio specialising in baby photography in Northampton, we would love to document every precious moment of your baby’s journey, but we understand that isn’t always realistic.
We’ve written this guide, either to help you decide when’s best to book your baby photoshoot, or, if your baby has already arrived, what you can expect to capture at those milestone baby stages.
I’d like to jump straight to:
Newborn – New Arrivals up-to 3 Weeks Old
1-3 Months Old – More Awake & Alert Babies
4-8 Months Old – Personality & Gummy Smiles
5–12 Months – Sitting & 1st Birthday

Newborn – New Arrivals up to 3 Weeks Old.
This is the classic “awww” photoshoot… something truly special and completely unrepeatable.
Newborn photography is best captured within 2-3 weeks of birth, when babies are still very sleepy and beautifully curled up. At this stage, babies tend to sleep deeply, allowing us to create those serene, timeless newborn portraits.
After 2-3 weeks, babies become more alert and begin to stretch out, making these peaceful, sleepy poses far more difficult to achieve.
These early days are filled with wonder. Hours spent gazing at your tiny bundle in disbelief that we made them. Newborn photography preserves the most delicate details forever: milky smiles, downy hair, tiny fingers, button noses and perfectly wrinkled toes.
We always encourage parents to be involved, even if it feels daunting at the time. These tender family portraits often become the most treasured images, bringing back powerful memories of the very beginning of your family story.

1-3 Months Old – More Awake and Alert Babies.
From around three weeks onwards, babies are far more alert and curious about the world around them. This stage is perfect for capturing wide-eyed expressions and early personality.
At this age, babies aren’t mobile yet, so portraits focus on images where your baby is lying down, gently supported, or held in loving arms. To add variety, we encourage parents and siblings to join in. Babies thrive on closeness and cuddles, and these interactions create beautifully natural photographs.
You’ll begin to see more expressions emerging, and many babies can briefly hold their heads during tummy time. These moments often result in gorgeous, candid images full of curiosity and character.
Because modelling is surprisingly tiring for little ones, sessions are relaxed and baby-led. Smiles often come with a little help… think peek-a-boo, tickles, and silly noises… but the reward is those heart-melting early giggles.

4-8 Months Old – Personality and Gummy Smiles.
This is a truly wonderful age for baby photography in Northampton.
Babies are usually sitting (with or without support), smiling freely, and engaging with the world around them. Their personalities are blossoming, and those gloriously gummy smiles steal the show.
Unaffected by self-consciousness, babies at this stage express pure, raw emotion. While the big smiles are delightful, it’s often the quieter, thoughtful expressions and fleeting glances that create the most powerful portraits… images full of innocence and authenticity.
The bond between baby and parents is now strong and unmistakable, making this stage ideal for capturing natural family interactions. These portraits often stop parents in their tracks, revealing just how much their baby has grown.
Including siblings and parents adds depth to the story, preserving the relationships and dynamics within your family at this moment.

5–12 Months – Sitting and 1st Birthday.
Your baby’s first birthday photoshoot is one of the most popular milestones we photograph, and for good reason.
By now, your baby will look almost unrecognisable compared to their newborn images. Many are crawling, shuffling, or taking those first tentative steps. A few teeth may have appeared too, often accompanied by plenty of dribble!
This stage allows for a wider variety of poses and moments: sitting and playing, standing with support, cruising along furniture, or briefly pausing to investigate a favourite toy.
Sessions are energetic, playful, and full of laughter. We use songs, games, and gentle encouragement to capture genuine smiles and belly laughs… along with the occasional wobble or tumble.
If you’re looking for range, expression, and character, this is an incredibly rewarding age to photograph, even if it does mean keeping up with a very busy one-year-old!

So, What is the Best Age for Baby Photography?
There’s no single “best” age for professional baby photography, it all depends on what moments you want to remember and the style of images you love most.
Some parents choose one meaningful stage, while others opt for multiple sessions to document their baby’s growth across the first year.
Babies can be unpredictable at any age, so patience and flexibility are key. We allow time for feeds, cuddles, nappy changes, and settling… your baby always leads the session. After all, they’re the boss!
If you’re considering baby photography in Northampton and would like guidance on the best stage for your family, we’re always happy to help you capture the moments that matter most to your family.
