We’re often told we’re worth the drive! Flattered is an understatement, but admit to loving this comment. Our clients mainly come from the home counties and some from further afield through appreciation of our purist, black and white portrait photography. We welcomed a relatively local Bedfordshire family who brought along the very gorgeous 2 month old baby Samuel for his first ever photoshoot.
The classic sleepy newborn photoshoot isn’t always a possibility for everyone for a host of reasons. The reward for waiting a few weeks for that first baby photoshoot are gorgeous awake shots capturing intense expressions from older babies waking up to the world. Baby Samuel was exactly this, very curious about the whole photoshoot experience, peering at us intensely as we worked while enjoying some closeness with mum and dad for some family shots toward the end.

There can often be a fair amount of crying, feeding and soothing which is all in a days work for us as baby photographers and why we allow plenty of time for each session. Every baby needs time to feel safe and secure in our unfamiliar studio, and we’re happy to chat till the cows come home until baby is ready to roll!
Another bonus is that older babies are more able to interact with their parents, with occasional smiles and adoring looks. They also have a tendency to snuggle in to the safety and comfort of mum and dad, which is why we have a specific workflow. We tend to start with some individual portraits to try and capture some well loved expressions before baby tires and looks for cuddles. This set of images shows the results of exactly this process. We absolutely love the one of Samuel in dad’s arms and being adored by mum as they’re so personal, almost as if peeking in on an intimate parent-child moment of bonding.

Samuel has an amazing crop of hair, and this always works well adding definition and contrast in the final images. We love the fact that he’s naked in his photos, as his newness to the world is still very obvious in his beautiful skin, bunched fists and rounded baby features. We base our work on our heartfelt belief that babies and children need no adornment or fuss to accentuate their already perfect features, and our fuss free approach ensures Samuel is the star of each image.
We loved this shoot. It was a pleasure to chat with mum and dad who tolerated our chatter well! It was also a lovely experience to work with an older baby and to be able to capture some precious early family moments.
Thanks to mum, dad and baby Samuel for a really lovely shoot, it was a real privilege.
